Dear neighbors,
While many of us did not agree with all of his ideologies, Franklin D. Roosevelt was nonetheless an historic president and brilliant orator. It was during his inaugural address that he delivered one of the most brilliantly articulate sentences in such an address. He said ...
"So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself—nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance."
Roosevelt was right in his assessment that fear can paralyze people into inaction. I am sorry to say that this has become the goal of my opposition and the incumbent in Assembly District 5.
It isn't even Halloween, and the opposition is sending frightening and baseless charges against me to paralyze voters into re-electing someone who has represented her party but not the voters who elected her.
Recently, they claimed that I will lay off thousands of police officers as soon as I am elected. They cite my interview with Nevada News & Views. Here is the interview they cited. This is the specific question and answer they twisted to scare you into submission.
To what degree do you believe the state should support the funding of local fire and police needs?
"All government employees must receive a fair and equitable pay, without question. Where our state, and some cities, have run into trouble is that budgets are voted for but not always properly appropriated. It seems to me that local officials are better equipped to ensure accountability than the state, but I would be interested to learn in what way local fire and police feel the state might improve these critical services."
Clearly stated, I would like to meet with law enforcement and see what it is they need to do their jobs better. So, the question to ask yourself, in this election, is why would my opposition put a mailer out that is patently false?
"Beware of false prophets, which will come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit." — Matthew 7:15-7:17
I know it might seem out of place to quote scripture in an election, but the wisdom is sound. For the last two years, Nevada has produced poor results and bad fruit.
And now, rather than discuss these issues openly and honestly, the opposition is gathering thorns and thistles because they think that fear will keep voters from making educated choices. They think fear will keep you from knowing the truth about her record.
I will do my very best to support law enforcement after the election. It seems to me that the best way to accomplish this is to reverse the damage done to our economy by some of the worst legislation passed in our history, legislation that the incumbent supported blindly at the beck and call of her party.
If we can fix the economy, reduce unemployment, and better educate our children, then the state will see government funding grow without raising taxes.
If we can better appropriate money to critical services as opposed to elective pet projects, then law enforcement will receive more support from the state, especially because the state will be better able to give money back to the municipalities that fund those services. At the same time, more vibrant economies generally see a decrease in crime, making it safer for us to work, play, and live in our communities.
Isn't that what we all want? I would like to think so. But it seems the rash of mailers do not have anything to do with effective government and everything to do with creating an illusion of fear. And that brings me back to Roosevelt.
He said "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." And if Roosevelt was right, then the only thing we have to fear are the people who aim to profit from fear by spreading it.
Please join me in putting an end to "fear politics" that distract Nevada voters from a brighter future. We can create jobs, strengthen the economy, and improve education. And, at the same time, as all of us prosper, better train and equip the people we entrust to provide us with the safest possible places to live our lives.
If you agree with me and the issues you care about, do not hesitate to call me direct at 702.427.7807. We have a growing group of dedicated people helping out. I would be honored if you did too.
Respectfully,
Tim Williams
